Ohio Car Insurance Requirements
The State of Ohio requires that anyone who operates a motor vehicle or owns a motor vehicle be financially responsible. The most common way to satisfy this requirement is through an auto insurance policy.
Ohio law requires the following for auto insurance coverage: Bodily Injury Liability Coverage as well as PropertyDamage Liability Coverage.
Currently, the minimum car insurance requirements to be financially responsible in Ohio are as follows:
- Bodily injury liability- $25,000 per person and $50,000 for all persons injured in any one accident.
- Property damage liability- $25,000 for damage to others property in any one accident.
What Does Auto Liability Insurance Typically Cover?
Bodily injury liability coverage pays for injuries you cause someone else in an auto accident. An example: You run a red light and hit another car in the intersection. The other driver suffers a broken arm and leg. Your policy will pay (up to the policy limits) for the medical expenses associated with that broken arm and leg.
Property damage liability coverage pays for damages to another’s property. Following the previous example, property damage liability would pay to fix the vehicle you damaged in the accident.
Types of Car Insurance Coverage
Besides the state requirements already mentioned, there are several other coverages you should know about. Depending on your situation, some of these may be optional.
- Medical Payments- Pays for medical, hospital or funeral expenses for you and others injured or killed while riding in your car, regardless of fault. It also covers you and family members if struck by a car as a pedestrian or if riding in another car.
- Uninsured Motorists/Underinsured Motorists Bodily Injury Liability- Pays for injuries to you or your passengers when hit by someone who does not have auto insurance (uninsured). Also pays for injuries to you or your passengers when hit by someone who does not have ENOUGH auto insurance to pay for your injuries (underinsured).
- Comprehensive coverage (also known as other than collision)- Pays for damage to your car due to glass breakage, contact with an animal, theft, fire, explosion, falling objects, vandalism, flood and earthquake.
- Collision coverage- Pays for damage to your car due to overturn or upset or collision with anything other than an animal.
How Much Car Insurance Do I Need?
Although the state of Ohio only requires a MINIMUM amount, we seldom recommend the minimum requirement. Why? Because in today’s world of expensive vehicles, high medical bills and tendency to file a lawsuit, the minimum requirements don’t adequately provide the protection you need. And if you have any assets at all (think your home, a rental property, investments, retirement accounts, you get the picture), you’re leaving these up for grabs.
Once the liability limit is gone, it’s GONE. And you’re stuck paying the rest out of your own pocket. Which is why you buy auto insurance in the first place- to PREVENT this from happening.
