Honoring one of Logan County's fallen- Gunnery Sergeant David S. Spicer

Through the assistance of Progressive Insurance, Alan Galvez Insurance was recently able to contribute $250 to the Gunnery Sergeant David S. Spicer Memorial Foundation. The Foundation was established in 2011 by family members in honor of David S. Spicer. They are a non-profit organization that has been issued the section 501(c)(3) Federal tax exemption. Their mission is to provide scholarships for Logan County students attending college. Accepting the check in the picture are David's mom Sandy Lockwood and her husband Gary. 

Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded Six $1,000 scholarships to Logan County students. Past recipients include:

2012- Courtney Lee Forsythe attending Trine University (Benjamin Logan High School)      

2013- Brett Michael Wisner attending Miami University (Bellefontaine High School)          

2014- Jordan Mathew Fox attending Ohio State University (Bellefontaine High School)         

2015- Josie Sue Corwin attending Ohio State University (Indian Lake High School)          

2015-  Hailey Rochelle Lockwood attending Ashland University (Special class of 1994 and Foundation)          

2016 Daniel Kent Meier attending Ohio State University (Benjamin Logan High School)      
Remembering David

Gunnery Sergeant David Shane Spicer was born October 13, 1975 in Dayton, Ohio and moved to Lakeview (Logan County), Ohio in 1976. Mother Sandra married Gary Lockwood on May 17, 1980. David's family then included siblings Tom and Tim Stacy and Tara and Steve Lockwood. 

David attended Benjamin Logan School System grades K-12. He graduated in June 1994.
 
David joined the Marine Corps. in September, 1994, and graduated Basic Training from Parris Island, South Carolina on December 23, 1994.

David married Kate Thompson on July 23, 2005 at the Marine Base Chapel in Indian Head, Maryland. They had twins on July 10, 2008, Abigail and David II. The twins were born premature at only 23 weeks and 5 days. Unfortunately David II died 8 days later, on July 18,2008.

Gunnery Sergeant David S., Spicer was killed in Afghanistan on July 13, 2009. He was buried with full military honors (along with his son David II) in Arlington National Cemetery on July 23, 2009, the same day as his 4th wedding anniversary with Kate. 

Kate was pregnant at the time David was killed in action. Their son, Chance David, was born August 31, 2009.

2016 Memorial Ride to benefit the Foundation

The 6th Annual Gunnery Sergeant David S. Spicer Memorial Ride will take place on July 16, 2016, rain or shine. All proceeds raised through the event benefit the Foundation. The ride begins and ends at the American Legion Post 173 (120 Colton Ave. Bellefontaine, Ohio). Cost is $20 per person and registration begins at 10am, with the ride beginning at 12 noon. Last bike in is 5 pm. There will be music/DJ, door prizes, raffles, and food once the last bike is in. All street legal vehicles are welcome. If you have any questions about the ride, or the Foundation, please contact David's mother, Sandy, at (937) 599-4281. Your donations and participation will continue the tradition of awarding scholarships to Logan County students. Please join in this worthy event if you can!

As we look toward the Independence Day weekend, it's a great time to remember freedom is most definitely not free. Many have fought so we can enjoy the freedom we have today. It is an honor to recognize David through his Foundation. His sacrifice is the greatest of all.
