In 2016, we held our inaugural Honor Our Flag Days event. The event celebrated the U.S. flag, as well as Flag Day. It was so successful, we're doing it again! Here's the Details.....
Come to our office at 134 West Columbus Ave., Bellefontaine and exchange your tattered flag for a brand new one. Our flags are 3' by 5', made of nylon and embroidered. They are proudly made in the U.S.A. and ordered through American Legion Flag & Emblem, where a portion of the proceeds benefit veterans program offered through the Legion.
You can exchange your flag June 7, 8, 9, 12, 13 and 14 from 9am-5pm- our regular office hours. Please drop by and see us- we really enjoyed talking to everyone who came by, especially the veterans who shared their service stories with us.
Unserviceable Flag Ceremony
June 14 is Flag Day, It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. In 1916, the president of the United States issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.
The Unserviceable Flag Ceremony is an official ceremony for the proper and dignified disposal of flags that are no longer fit to fly.
The ceremony will start at 6pm directly in front of our office. The street will be closed from the alley next to Craft, Paper, Scissors to Detroit (1 block).
Opening remarks (Flag Day history) will be delivered by Pastor Mike Valentine, followed by the ceremony. The evening will conclude with a performance of "To The Colors" by Myles Bowers, Benjamin Logan band director. Sound is being provided by DJ Joe Pine of American Entertainment.
Why Did We Choose Flag Day?
We chose Flag Day simply because it's a holiday that is not well celebrated. Memorial Day is most definitely celebrated by honoring fallen soldiers, complete with parades, visiting of graves and plenty of cookouts. 4th of July is the same- celebrating our country's independence is always cause for fireworks, parades, cookouts and overall fun.
Flag Day doesn't get that treatment. And the flag is pretty special. It's a symbol of our country- our freedom, our honor, our traditions. So we decided to change that and take several days surrounding Flag Day to honor our flag. And we were very happy with the response!
For the 2016 flag exchange, we gave out 80 brand new flags and collected close to 200 tattered flags for proper disposal. For this year we have 150 flags to give away- so don't miss out!
The Unserviceable Flag Ceremony was very well received- several in attendance had never witnessed the ceremony before and were very appreciative of the opportunity. We look forward to making the experience even better this time around!
Please join us for the Flag Exchange and/or Unserviceable Flag Ceremony. We look forward to seeing you! If you have any questions, please contact our office at (937) 592-4871.
