Bellefontaine Ohio auto insurance claims- Alan Galvez InsuranceTrue Story- Husband hits wife's car

Our insured (let's call him Sam), was backing his car out of the driveway and hit his wife's new Mustang. Obviously, after the screaming and cursing was through, the wife called us asking several questions, one of which included, "How Does My Ohio Auto Insurance Work If I Hit Another Car I Own?"

Great question.

Here's how these claims work out in the end- let's start with liability

The liability portion of an auto insurance policy pays for bodily injury and property damage.....to OTHERS. Whoever fits the definition of an INSURED is not an OTHER. Insured would mean the policyholder and spouse, in this situation. Another way to think about it is- you can't be liable to yourself.

So the liability portion of your auto policy can't pay for the property damage to the wife's car.

So if no liability coverage, what else is available?

Let's try collision coverage next

In this case, the vehicle that did the hitting was a liability only vehicle, so in the absence of collision, there is nothing you can use on the auto policy to get that car fixed.

The Mustang did have collision coverage, luckily. So has the coverage required to get it fixed. Of course, the deductible would come into play.

Important note: IF the hitting vehicle had had collision coverage, then it could have also been fixed. However, the deductible applies per vehicle, so there would have been TWO deductibles to be paid. Just an FYI in case you're curious.

So if you hit your own car, the only remedy you have to get the car(s) fixed is collision coverage. If you don't have it, you're out of luck.
