Now in it's 3rd year, we are excited to again host Honor Our Flag Days. This event is designed to honor our flag, Flag Day and the many men and women who have served our flag, both present and past. We've made some changes to this year's event, so read on for the details.
Come to our office at 134 West Columbus Avenue in downtown Bellefontaine and exchange your tattered flag for a new one. Although we will accept any size flag, you will receive a nylon 3' x 5' flag in return. The flags are American made and ordered through American Legion Flag & Emblem company. A portion of the proceeds will benefit American Legion Harold Kerr Post #173, based in Bellefontaine.
You can exchange your flag June 11-15 from 9am-12pm and 1pm-5pm. Please drop by and see us- we've enjoyed talking to the many people who have visited to exchange their flag. We've heard lots of amazing stories and appreciate the opportunity to spend time with each of you.
Each flag will also come with a complimentary flag etiquette book.
NEW this year- we're giving away several patriotic-themed prizes, so don't forget to sign up for a chance to win! Rumor has it, they will be PERFECT for a 4th of of July celebration.
In 2017 we gave out close to 100 flags and collected close to 200, so we'd call that a success!
Also NEW- we want you to show off your new flag on Facebook or Instagram! Post a picture and use the hashtag #flagsfromgalvezins so everyone can enjoy it too!
What about the Unserviceable Flag Ceremony?
Since we started, we've hosted an Unserviceable Flag Ceremony on Flag Day, in front of our office. The ceremony is the proper way to dispose of unserviceable flags. Coordinating the ceremony takes a lot of time, effort, and volunteers. Unfortunately, only 15-20 people have attended each year. It simply doesn't make sense to continue to host the ceremony with so few people attending. This was by no means an easy decision to make, but perhaps in the future we can bring it back.
A brief history of Flag Day
June 14 is Flag Day. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. In 1916, the president of the United States issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.
How you can help make our Flag Exchange a success:
- Bring your old flag to our office and exchange for a new 3' x 5' one. Supplies are limited, so don't delay!
- Share our social media posts to help spread the word (please Like us on Facebook if you haven't yet)
- Grab a flyer next time you're at our office and give to friends or family who would also be interested
- Post a picture of your new flag on Facebook or Instagram and use the hashtag #flagsfromgalvezins
- Tell friends/family- this is perfect opportunity to retire your tattered flag!
We are excited about this event and hope to see you. Please spread the word! If you have any questions, please call us at (937) 592-4871 or email Carrie directly. Thank you so much for your participation and support of Honor Our Flag Days.
