Mad River CrossFit- Guest Article by Cale Marker- Fitness tipsThe way we talk about fitness at Mad River CrossFit (MRCF) is a little different than what most people think of when they say "fitness." To us fitness is best defined by Greg Glassman (the founder of CrossFit) as work capacity across broad time and modal domains. You’ll notice nothing in that definition refers to the size of your biceps or six-pack abs.

I think a lot of people come into any gym, specifically this time of year, and they’re looking to change the way they look. They have a lot of resolutions and goals, but after a few weeks, maybe a few months those things fall by the wayside. But, what I see happening in our gym is a little different. People initially walk in our doors with all those same resolutions and goals ("trimmer waist," "more defined arms," "smaller thighs," "eat less calories"), but it’s not very long until their goals shift, and rather than having a six-pack they focus on wanting a pull-up, or handstand pushup or double unders. What happens then is people start seeing physical changes almost as a byproduct of the performance goals they’re chasing.

And it can be hard to keep any kind of fitness goal or resolution, especially when you feel alone in that goal, or don’t really know how to make the change you’d like to see. That’s something else that I see as being a little different about MRCF. There is such a strong sense of community between all the members. It becomes really easy to see members encouraging members to stick with goals, get to class, and put in the work that’s needed. Our members also lean on each other for support and seek knowledge from one another. If one person has a killer recipe for a healthy snack, soon EVERYONE has it because we all know how hard it can be to eat right and members want to help each other in any way they can.

We’re always looking to add to our family too and love it when new people come to check us out at one of our events or community workouts. We have free community workouts every Saturday at 9:00 am.
