Washing the exterior areas of your home, especially the siding, can be accomplished by using items found in the laundry room and a two gallon pump sprayer . Mix a small amount of bleach and detergent and 1.5 gallons of water. Fill the pump sprayer and spray with a pattern that covers the area to be cleaned. Do not over use the soap it- only takes a light coverage.
Start with an area no bigger than 10 feet wide, apply soap and let stand for 5 minutes. Take a soft brush on a handle and lightly brush the area. It is very important that the soap does not dry on the siding. Rinse with a garden hose or power washer. Repeat task every 10 feet around your property until you reach the area you started at.
This process should remove surface contaminants such as bug and spider dung, as well as mildew. Mildew is easy to spot- it appears as little black dots, and in some cases, green.
Results may vary due to each side of your home receiving different types of sun, rain, wind and other seasonal weather. Old vinyl siding can get sun drenched after years and look blotchy after washing. This condition can be restored using products that cover the siding with a polymer coating .
Use caution when using a power washer to rinse siding as you can cause more damage than good if you get too close. Do not try to clean the soffit area that is perforated as water will go into places that water should not be .
Some stains in siding cannot be removed as they have penetrated into the vinyl. Using a soft scrub product can aid in removing some stains.
