Water Backup Claims are not just limited to a floor drain
When you think of water backup of sewers, drains or sump pumps, let's be honest- do you automatically think of a basement floor drain?
Granted, a lot of water backup claims do start with basement floor drains.
However, floor drains are NOT the only source of water backup.
Here's a list of other plumbing sources that have a drainage system that can back up into your house:
Wherever there's a drain, there's an opportunity for it to get plugged up and back up into your house. Remember that.
Water Backup is NOT covered in an Ohio homeowners insurance policy
Read- excluded. Not paid under any circumstance. The largest water backup claim we've seen paid? Between $15,000 and $20,000.
Do you have that amount of money just sitting around? Most of us don't. However, you don't have to.
Water Backup coverage can be added to your homeowners policy pretty easily
Annual premium for the coverage is around $50-75. Coverage amounts available range from $10,000-$50,000, depending on the company. A deductible normally applies- we see $500 on average.
The Water Backup endorsement also pays for the cleanup costs
Yes, these claims can be terribly messy. And the more finished surfaces are involved, the worse the mess. That's why when we get notice of water backup claims, we dispatch water damage professionals to start the clean up. They can suck out water, dry your stuff and professionally clean it to eliminate problems such as mold, mildew and rot (which are limited in homeowners insurance policies FYI).
The moral of the story?
If your home doesn't have a basement, don't discount the very real possibility of water still backing up through a drain in another water source, like your sink or toilet. It can happen and does happen. We've paid these claims many times. And therefore, don't discount the value of the water backup endorsement.
