Recreational Vehicle Insurance Information

Recreational Vehicle Insurance (RV Insurance)- including Bellefontaine, Marysville, Columbus and central Ohio

What is RV insurance?

Recreational vehicle insurance is designed to cover a wide range of vehicles including motor homes, buses, travel trailers and campers. It includes coverage similar to that of auto insurance, but also has specialty coverage items that are tailored to an RV lifestyle.

What are examples of recreational vehicles?

Motor homes are motor vehicles designed to provide living quarters and are permanently attached to a motor vehicle chassis or van. Motor homes are typically divided into the following categories- A, B and C. Examples of each category are as follows:

  • Class A- conventional motor home and bus conversions. One feature of this class is that the vehicles can be very long, up to 75 feet in some situations.
  • Class B- camper vans and travel trailers.
  • Class C- Fifth wheel vehicles and mini-motor homes.

Travel trailers and campers are non-motorized, portable units designed to be towed on public roads by a land motor vehicle and designed for recreational and camping use. Pull behind and pop-up campers are pretty common examples.

What does RV insurance cover?

As mentioned before, RV insurance has several of the same coverage items as auto insurance. These are listed below.

Bodily Injury and property damage liability- If you injure someone in a crash for which you are legally to blame, this coverage pays for the injuries (including death) and the cost of legal defense, if necessary. If you damage someone else's property due to a crash for which you are legally to blame, this coverage pays to repair the damage (available for motor homes as they function as a standalone vehicle).

Medical Payments- Pays for medical, hospital or funeral expenses for you and others injured or killed while riding in your vehicle regardless of fault. It also covers you and family members if struck by a car as a pedestrian or if riding in another car (available for motor homes as they function as a standalone vehicle).

Uninsured Motorists/Underinsured Motorists Bodily Injury Liability- Pays for injuries to you or your passengers when hit by someone who does not have liability insurance (uninsured) OR when hit by someone who does not have ENOUGH auto insurance to pay for your injuries (underinsured).

Comprehensive Coverage (Other than Collision)- Pays for damage to your car due to glass breakage, contact with an animal, theft, fire, explosion, falling objects, vandalism, flood and earthquake.

Collision Coverage- Pays for damage to your car due to overturn or upset or collision with anything other than an animal.

Specialized insurance coverage just for RV’s

Personal Effects- Contents within your RV or within a certain area outside of the RV.

Vacation liability- Pays up to specified limits for bodily injury and property damage for which the insured is legally responsible as a result of an accident that occurs while the RV is used as a temporary vacation residence.

Full-timers coverage for those who use their RV as a permanent residence- Provides homeowner like coverage for people who use their RV as a permanent residence. Includes Personal Liability, Medical Payments, and storage shed contents coverage.

Roadside Assistance- Provides towing to the nearest qualified repair facility and necessary labor at the time and place of disablement when RVs are disabled due to: mechanical or electrical breakdown, battery failure, insufficient supply of fuel, oil, water or other fluids, flat tire, lock-out, or entrapment in snow, mud, water or sand within 100 feet of the roadway.

Some RV insurance companies may also offer such coverage choices as pet injury, Mexico physical damage, trailer coverage and disappearing deductibles. Be sure to ask about what’s available to you.

How much does it cost to insure an RV?

The cost to insure an RV varies widely depending on many factors. Here’s just a sample:

  • Type of RV- the bigger and more complex the vehicle, chances are good the premium will be more.
  • Whether you use it occasionally or as a full-time residence
  • Your driving record
  • The type of coverage you have, including limits and any extra items as mentioned in the previous section. Like any insurance policy, you can dress it up or down, and that will affect premium.

Luckily, many RV insurance companies offer lots of discounts, including multi-policy, paid in full, good driving record, homeowner and even if you’re the original owner.  Contact us today to see how we can help you with your RV insurance!
