Motorcycle Insurance Information
Motorcycle Insurance- including Bellefontaine, Marysville, Columbus and Central Ohio
Your motorcycle is more than just a way to get around, it's a lifestyle. And who better to understand that lifestyle than insurance agents who also ride? Yes, it's true- several of our agents ride motorcycles and have for many years. From short hops around town to long distance trips (think thousands of miles a year), we understand what motorcycle riders need. We work with you to uncover your needs and provide what you need to keep riding. When you need motorcycle insurance, do you REALLY want to trust your ride to an agent that DOESN'T ride? We've got this- go enjoy the ride.
What does motorcycle insurance cover?
A motorcycle insurance policy includes coverage very similar to an auto insurance policy. For example, Bodily Injury Liability, Property Damage Liability, Comprehensive and Collision Coverage mean the same thing. Here’s some definitions/examples for you:
Bodily injury Liability
If you injure someone in a crash for which you are legally to blame, this coverage pays for the injuries (including death) and the cost of legal defense, if necessary.
Property Damage Liability
If you damage someone else's property due to a car crash for which you are legally to blame, this coverage pays to repair the damage.
Comprehensive Coverage (Other than Collision)
Pays for damage to your motorcycle due to glass breakage, contact with an animal, theft, fire, explosion, falling objects, vandalism, flood and earthquake.
Pays for damage to your motorcycle due to overturn or upset or collision with anything other than an animal.
Other motorcycle insurance coverage explained
Besides the above, there are several additional coverage items you might be interested in. Not every motorcycle insurance policy offers all items listed here, so please consult your company with any questions.
Pays for medical, hospital or funeral expenses for you and others injured or killed while riding on your motorcycle, regardless of fault. It also covers you and family members if struck by a car as a pedestrian or if riding in another vehicle.
Uninsured Motorists/Underinsured Motorists Bodily Injury Liability
- Pays for injuries to you or your passengers when hit by someone who does not have bodily injury liability insurance (uninsured).
- Pays for injuries to you or your passengers when hit by someone who does not have ENOUGH bodily injury liability insurance (underinsured).
Uninsured Motorists Property Damage
Pays for damage to your car when involved in a crash with at at-fault uninsured motorist (note- not available if you have collision coverage, as collision would work in a similar fashion).
Items that are installed on the bike AFTER it has rolled off the factory line. Common examples include chrome, saddlebags, custom paint, seats and trailers. Some policies may offer automatic coverage up to a certain dollar amount, with the option to pay premium for additional coverage.
Towing to the nearest qualified repair facility and necessary labor at the time and place of disablement when the motorcycle is disabled. Common examples include mechanical or electrical breakdown, battery failure, insufficient supply of fuel, oil, water or other fluids and flat tire. Mileage restrictions, as well as other covered causes of loss, may apply, so be sure to check with your insurance company.
What is full coverage insurance on a motorcycle?
Unfortunately, the term “full coverage” is a made up word that the general population has grabbed onto (and sadly, some insurance agents too). When we hear you say full coverage insurance on a motorcycle, we assume you’re requesting liability + physical damage coverage (which equals comprehensive and collision). You can also read our article "Full Coverage Auto Insurance vs. Liability Only" for a more detailed discussion.
Does motorcycle insurance cover medical bills?
Yes, and in several ways. If you have Medical Payments coverage (discussed previously), that would be available to you and any passengers to pay medical bills. Otherwise, your bodily injury liability coverage would respond to pay medical bills for passengers. If the accident was your fault, it would also respond to pay for medical bills for others who are injured in the other vehicle.
Does motorcycle insurance cover theft?
If you have comprehensive coverage, then yes.
What is the average cost of motorcycle insurance?
Although 20 years ago this answer might have been possible, there are so many rating factors now that it’s impossible to come up with an average.
Here are just SOME of the factors that come into play in rating a policy:
- Type of motorcycle
- Age of motorcycle
- Your age
- How many miles you drive annually
- Where you live
- Your driving record
- Your insurance score, which takes into account credit history. This is legal to use as a rating tool in many states- Ohio is one of them.
- Personal info such as whether you passed a motorcycle safety class or belong to a motorcycle association.
- Safety information about the bike such as alarm system or other disabling devices
- And MUCH MORE!
